Capture the flag
about this project
Capture the flag addresses the misconceptions surrounding cybercrime in Nigeria. This cutting-edge project aims to shift perceptions, raise awareness, and provide alternative pathways to protect vulnerable individuals from the serious consequences of cybercrime.
HOW IT WORKS
In some Nigerian communities, there is a perception that cybercrime is relatively victimless because people think the main targets are affluent individuals from Western countries who can afford – or even deserve – to pay. This perception can foster the idea that cybercrime is a legitimate choice of profession, and in some cases mothers actively encourage their sons down the cybercrime career path.
In reality, many of the victims of Nigerian cybercriminals (or ‘Yahoo boys’ as they’re known locally) are ordinary Nigerian citizens, who suffer financial losses they can ill afford or lose access to crucial online platforms that they rely on in their day-to-day lives. In addition, involvement in cybercrime can act as a ‘gateway’ through which young people get involved in other forms of serious criminality like narcotics trafficking and organised migration crime.
ππΏπΆπ΄π΅ππ²πΏ πππππΏπ²π, a cutting-edge initiative TAG International is delivering on behalf of the Home Office, seeks to alter the prevailing perception of 'Yahoo’ and strengthen people’s recognition that it is serious crime with serious effects on poor Nigerian citizens. Working in collaboration with established platforms like Diary of Hackers, Brighter Futures is raising awareness, providing alternative pathways, and catalysing attitudinal and behavioural shifts to protect both Nigerians, UK and global citizens from this destructive and pernicious problem.
